Perry has the father of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first TV roles included two episodes in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. Perry was forbidden to start acting in front of her family until she reached adulthood, as they feared the stress it would create. Perry claimed that she was too nervous to be an actor during high school, but started performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry made her debut with New York after graduation, performing in minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as a theater actress. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was performed in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, she was a part-time character in ABC's thriller about politics Scandal in which her father was the main character. She played the role of a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off episode from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. Despite having a family connection to the character she got the role through an audition.
